With reference to my Despatch No. 69 of
the 27th of February, I have the honour to confirm my code telegram of the 31st of May copy of which is enclosed.
The attached copy of a report by the
Director of Public Works explains the dilemma in which this Government has been placed by the failure of the pump referred to in my Despatch under reference.
The inconvenience to the native popula- -tion caused by the disconnection of the house services is very great, especially at the present juncture when the hot weather has begun and the Sanitary Authorities owing to the presence of Cerebro-spinal fever and plague are endeavouring to inculcate cleanliness, while the expense of installing street fountains will amount to some $200.
In addition the Government has experienced loss of credit owing to the failure when it is sorely needed
of its newly installed additional reservoir.
At the last meeting of the Legisktive Council the Director of Public Works on my instructions made a short statement explanatory of the failure of the Water Supply and an Unofficial Member has given notice of a question as to
